Senior Living Facility Receives New Hot Water Pump

Hot Water Distribution Issues at a Senior Living Facility

Overview

A senior living facility in New England, a longstanding customer of the Gustavo Preston Company (GPC), reached out with an urgent concern: a hot water distribution pump was generating excessive noise and vibration. Ensuring resident comfort and safety is a top priority in senior living facilities, making immediate attention critical. GPC responded promptly with a site evaluation and a tailored solution that restored reliable, quiet operation to the system.

Background

The facility relied on a single end suction pump for the building’s hot water distribution system. Over time, staff noticed increasing levels of noise and vibration coming from the pump, raising concerns about both system reliability and resident comfort.

Challenge

Upon inspection, a GPC sales representative identified several critical issues:

  • Excessive Noise and Vibration: Likely caused by deteriorated bearings or shaft misalignment.
  • Mechanical Seal Leak: Indicating wear and risk of further equipment damage.
  • Improper VFD Placement: The existing variable frequency drive (VFD) was mounted directly on top of the pump—a suboptimal setup exposing the VFD to heat and vibration, potentially shortening its lifespan.

Solution

GPC recommended a comprehensive upgrade:

  • Pump Replacement: Install a WILO NL-HE end suction centrifugal pump, offering:
    • Silicon carbide mechanical seals for improved durability
    • Permanently lubricated, maintenance-free bearings
  • VFD Upgrade: Replace the existing VFD with a Yaskawa VFD, mounted on a nearby wall—away from vibration and heat—to maximize performance and longevity.

Because the WILO NL-HE had a larger footprint than the existing pump, the solution required redesigning and re-piping parts of the mechanical room. GPC coordinated and managed the installation to ensure a smooth transition with minimal system downtime.

Results

  • Reduced Noise and Vibration: The new system operates quietly, significantly improving resident comfort.
  • Increased Reliability: Enhanced seal and bearing technology reduces future maintenance needs.
  • Optimized VFD Performance: The relocated VFD is better protected, ensuring longer service life and improved energy efficiency.
  • Customer Satisfaction: The facility reported immediate improvements and appreciated the proactive approach taken by the GPC team.

Conclusion

By combining technical expertise with responsive service, GPC provided a modern, energy-efficient pumping solution tailored to the needs of a sensitive environment. This project highlights GPC’s commitment to long-term client partnerships and customized engineering solutions.
