Case Study Overview
The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)
MWRA provides high quality water and sewer services.
MWRA supplies 200 million gallons of water per day and treats 350 million gallons of sewage per day.
MWRA needed to replace its Syncroflo water booster system.
Eversource rebates provided 53% of the cost of the new water booster system.
Replacement system decreased energy usage by 44%.
Better interface with Plant Process & Information Control System (PICs).
As a long-standing customer of Gustavo Preston Company (GPC), when the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) needed to replace a water booster system with a more energy efficient system that incorporated Variable Frequency Drives for their wash down and mechanical seal water usage, MWRA chose Syncroflo Water Booster Pumping System, represented by GPC to replace its aging system. MWRA provides water and sewer services to 3.1 million people and more than 5,500 large industrial users in the Boston area. It supplies 200 million gallons of water per day and treats 350 million gallons of sewage per day.
Due to the age of the pumps and older technology of the existing system it was time to replace the 23-year-old existing Syncroflo water booster system with a more energy efficient system having newer technology.
The old water booster system was replaced with a Syncroflo triplex water booster system with VFD’s. Water booster systems can be an expensive piece of equipment in any mechanical room, so the MWRA worked with Eversource to apply for an energy savings rebate that reduced the cost of the water booster system by 53%. The cost savings didn’t end there. With the installation of the new Syncroflo Triplex system the energy efficiency of the new system reduced energy usage by 44%.
“Thank you to Gustavo Preston Company and their team for the great work in replacing our water booster system. The work was done on time and budget. The Eversource rebate and yearly savings in energy usage is a great benefit to MWRA rate payers.” Tim Jonah Assets Manager, MWRA, Deer Island
The MWRA now has a new system that was purchased for half the normal cost due to energy savings rebates and was able to decrease their energy usage by 44%. A win- win for the MWRA.
