Water is provided by a water authority to a building via the nearest pumping station. The pressure can be measured from the nearest hydrant via a fire test.

Fire pumps, unlike other pumps are not used continuously. They are generally tested regularly to insure performance, should they be needed.

Long coupled horizontally mounted pumps are defined as pumps which are driven by a separately mounted driver. A driver is most often an electric motor but can be an internal combustion engine.
